Our Seattle Drag and Ski Sprint Boat Club Members did very well at the world championship in Doha Qatar this past weekend. Our Club members took first and third at the prestigious event, Young Mike Kelly won the event with some skill, some luck, and some hard driving. Dave Villwock had it going his way in the event till the re-run o f the final and his motor let go, leaving the victory for the Kelly driven Graham Trucking which was lurking just behind him. Dave had the Elam boat really running well but salted down the turbine in the first go around and could not get it clean enough for the restart which was rushed due to pending darkness. Kelly was all smiles at the large awards ceremony at the Sheridan Hotel in downtown Doha as he accepted the beautiful first place award. Other members Nate Brown did well in the #17 boat till he got salted up, Nate was scored in 5th place, same problems with the Mike Webster entry #22 with the salt and gear box issues, but Brian Perkins ran the socks off the #48 Jimmy LaBrie prepped hull of the Go Fast Albert Lee Appliance team only to suffer engine problems and not make the final. With Villwock falling back in the final, that left the Oh Boy O'Berto boat driven by Steve David, to take the Hi Point Championship for both the boat and the driver award. Two flips marred the event but no one was hurt and the race was very well received by the large local crowd, and the attending Qatar royalty in the impressive Sheiks tent.
All I can say is Wow!!!
Pirates Rule.
09/19/09 Lake Chelan News
Good Morning Everyone!
No, it’s not a Jim gram …yet,,, but here is a nice deal from our friends at Chelan.
The G.P. associates have been scurrying around town for stuff and Bob Wright and John Walcher, our host, have put together a Friday night warm up party at the Apple Cup Café in downtown Chelan.
Diane, who is the head cheese there, is preparing a nice spread of food for all our racing folks, crews’ drivers, heck even me.
There will be happy hour prices on the drinks but the food layout is hosted by the Apple Cup Café.
I think there will be a lot of town folk there so bring your team cards for give a ways.
We also will have a free (tips encouraged) limousine for shuttling down to the Mill Bay Casino, no charge but tips are encouraged. The Limo number is 509-630-4716 ask for Joseph.
Kick off is about 8 pm, of course dinner and drinks are available anytime at the Apple Cup Café. They serve one heck of a good breakfast on race day.
So a couple of hours of fun, all part of “Grandview on the Lake Apple Cup Regatta.”
Thanks everyone.

07/13/09 Russ Dodge's Black Lake 1 Litre mod Report
The Western Divisionals are over and the weather held for the event although Sunday was a little wet and breezy. Seven 1 Litres showed up to compete for the prize. Competition is getting better with each event this year and as racer push the boats to the limit, we seem to be getting into each others water. I hope everyone loved the course as it proved out on the computer to be very close to the map. There was only 4 extra feet in the length and that is only 0.06 percent over. Well, it can never be short. That is just not allowed. It seems that several racers thought that the buoys should be moved a little bid as I had to replace 4 of them. They were not all the fault of the 1 Litres. The buoys are big and easy to see but do not take bumping or a sharp skid fin.
Robby Dahlquist is really turning up the wick and bloody fast. Dan Kanfoush in Jim Sechlers craft had his ‘A’ game running too. I had heard that Sean Bowsher was much faster and he proved it this weekend. I, on the other hand, had gremlins in the motors. Thanks to Sean for helping with a flywheel. I converted it into a Kawasaki part and the motor would at least start. The weekend went slowly for me until the final on Sunday. Another big thanks to Jim Sechler who offered an ignition trigger to fix the one that was causing me fits. I was able to finish 1st in the last heat on Sunday. Well, I was not the fastest boat but I managed to not jump the gun. Still the boat was 100 percent better. This help is the kind of glue that keeps boat racing alive and is the true meaning of friendship.
A couple of problems came up during racing. It all happened on the final heat. The first one happened just after all the boats crossed the starting line. There was a breeze coming down the front chute and Kanfoush was on a dead run to the turn. As he pulled ahead of me, I felt my boat start to climb. I added a bunch of wing and pulled a little back on the throttle and then pushed it to the floor. The boat settled and I felt the boat running well to the corner. Nick Bononcini was not as fortunate as his boat kept climbing and went over. Nick got out of the boat without help and all was good.
The next problem started in South Dakota . Sean Bowsher lost his cowling in a storm while traveling west. We lined him up to use Jim Sechler’s old cowling off of the white boat that I bought. The cowlings now belong to Allan Lagervall. Well, everything went well during the weekend for Sean and the cowling seemed to fit well enough to make the boat aerodynamic to be very competitive. In the restart of the final, all was going as planned until Sean lost the borrowed cowling at the exit of turn two. I managed to miss it by just inches but it did not have floatation and sunk in the black waters of the lake. Sean was having problems into the wind and backed off a little. A big thanks to all that came and raced.

06/15/09 TERRY TROXELL REMEMBERED
By Fred Farley - ABRA Unlimited Historian
Unlimited hydroplane racing lost one of its most respected participants on June 13, 2009. Terry Troxell, the winner of the 2005 APBA Gold Cup with MISS AL DEEBY DODGE, passed away following a massive heart attack at his home in Gig Harbor, Washington. He was 61.
Terry didn’t step up to the Unlimited level until rather late in his career, but it didn’t take long for him to achieve the winner’s circle.
A graphic artist by profession, a boat racer by avocation, Troxell handled high-speed hydroplanes for four decades.
He was related by marriage to the racing Weber family. His three brothers-in-law (Mike, Mark, and Steve Weber) and stepson (U-5 pilot Jeff Bernard) all drive power boats. He was the father-in-law of U-17 driver Kip Brown.
A two-time inductee into the prestigious APBA Hall of Champions for Limited inboard racing in 1997 and 1998, Troxell accepted his first Unlimited Class assignment in 2000 with the Fred Leland team.
Terry scored his first Unlimited victory in the 2001 Tri-Cities Columbia Cup with ZNETIX II when he outran second-place Dave Villwock and MISS BUDWEISER by six seconds in the Final Heat.
Troxell had the satisfaction of winning at the same eastern Washington race site where he had qualified as an Unlimited driver the year before.
Terry's 2002 season highlights included second-place finishes at Evansville, Madison, and Detroit with Leland's variously named U-99 entry.
In 2003, he took the wheel of Jim Harvey's MISS TRENDWEST, a new boat plagued with handling problems.
MISS TRENDWEST flipped upside-down at the Gold Cup in Detroit, but Troxell rebounded a month later to take third-place at San Diego.
As driver of the Ellstrom family's MISS E-LAM PLUS in 2004, Terry survived a very rough St. Clair River in Michigan to claim the St. Clair International Trophy, despite the battering wakes of ocean-going tankers in the vicinity.
The most prominent victory of Terry Troxell’s career has to be his 2005 triumph at Detroit with MISS AL DEEBY DODGE in the APBA Gold Cup, boat racing's most coveted award.
Ironically, a week before the race, Troxell didn't have a ride because the team for which he drove didn't exist.
Owner Dave Bartush purchased the back-up hull of the temporarily inactive Kim Gregory team. The boat was trucked from Las Vegas to Detroit with one turbine engine and a few spare parts. There wasn't even time to repaint the hull.
Knowing that his equipment was severely limited, Terry ran conservatively in the preliminary heats, playing a waiting game and earning just enough points to qualify for the Final.
The 2005 Gold Cup was marred by accidents and equipment damage. For the running of the Final Heat, only three boats were available to answer the starting gun. Troxell and MISS AL DEEBY DODGE, after running under wraps all weekend, "let it all hang out."
Terry crossed the starting line first in the outside lane and pulled to a decisive lead over J.W. Myers and MISS E-LAM PLUS. Myers and third-place Mike Weber in FORMULABOATS.COM were never a factor.
"Detroit is awesome," exclaimed a jubilant Troxell. "This is the best drivers' course in all of boat racing."
MISS AL DEEBY DODGE, amazingly, was the oldest boat in the race, having been built in 1987 as MILLER AMERICAN. It had previously won the Gold Cup in 1988 as MISS CIRCUS CIRCUS, in 1991 as WINSTON EAGLE, and in 1994 as SMOKIN' JOE'S.
At the 2005 Seattle race, Terry had the opportunity to race against his stepson Jeff Bernard (who was making his Unlimited debut) in the Provisional Heat on Lake Washington. It was a wild affair indeed and brought the crowd to its feet. Bernard outran Troxell over the finish line by barely a boat length. It doesn't get much closer!
A minor stroke sidelined Terry in late 2005 but he returned to competition at the 2006 Chevrolet Cup in Seattle as driver of Leland's U-99.
In 2008 at the Tri-Cities, Troxell finished third in the Unlimited Light hydroplane race as driver of NUMERICA CREDIT UNION (UL-8)
He was always eager to assist new participants in the sport. In the words of son-in-law Kip Brown, "Terry was a mentor to myself and to many other racers across the country."
Boat racing will miss Terry Troxell, a great driver and a good friend.

Marty Wolfe and gang has been racing in both the ULHRA G series and is right at the top of the chase for the APBA GP Hi-Point title. Lots of good blower boat racing going on this summer on the eastern side of the USA and Canada.
GP-12 Schellhase Racing
Bob Schellhase has teamed up with Hopp Racing GP-15 to field their two boat team. Bob's boat has not hit the water this year do to a blow over accident at Port Angeles last year. The left sponson was destroyed as well as the cowling and wings. Jones JR replaced the sponson. Bob and the Hopp Racing Team have been busy for the last two months finishing up the rest of the repairs getting the boat ready to run at Chelan. Not enough time to paint so the boat will run with the ever so cool tan primer on it. Bob's boat holds the World course record for the UL/GP type boats at 126.528 MPH on a surveyed record 1 2/3 mile course in San Diego.
GP-15 Graham Trucking GT-Happy Go Lucky-PumpTech
Greg and Jerry Hopp's former Alamo hull has a very impressive competition history. As the Alamo the boat won 3 national championships. Under Hopp Racing the hull in conjunction with the UL-12 has racked up 4 UL national championships. In 2007 it also won the inaugural NACCS G class of the ULHRA Hi-Point Championship with Jerry driving to his first ever driver Hi-Point championship. The boat is the second fastest Unlimited Light with a lap of 124.118 MPH at the Tri-Cities 1 2/3 mile course this year. The UL-15 has participated in all of the Unlimited Light events this year as well as attending APBA GP events. At Valleyfield this year it was one of 5 GP's that all qualified within one second of each other on their lap times. As the UL-15 the boat is currently in first place in the ULHRA series Hi-Points with 8165 series points over Joe Frauenheim's UL-72 with 7042 series points. Ever the fan favorite the GP-15 team will be giving their all.
Other BIG BLOCK teams are expected to compete as well.
